Chapter 25 – Auction Letdown

Ruth was still feeling shaky, and Pawlik decided one of the reasons was that she had not had anything really to eat. So they agreed to meet the Peregrine Rovers at a restaurant close by, and they both went to their respective offices to clear an hour’s worth of correspondence and report reviews. When they met again, they both looked like the break had helped both of their moods. Pawlik determinedly caught Ruth’s arm and pulled her out of the administration building and toward the restaurant. He said, “After the dinner with the Peregrines, we are taking off for home. This has been a terrible day with some good parts, but I am exhausted, and you are still recovering. So there will be no arguing about this, right?”

When Ruth sipped her arm through his, and they began to stroll, Pawlik could feel the tension of the day starting to leak out of him. Hunter chose that moment to phase in on Ruth’s left side. The presence of the catog caused more consternation than any of the spells that Ruth had thrown. The Mage did not enjoy any of it, but she would not try to duck confrontation.

However, any negative topic evaporated as the Lord and Lady of Borachland joined their protégés for a thoroughly enjoyable dinner. The boys were quite witty when they relaxed, and all of them, Samine included, were riding a high from getting the ship they wanted. The food was good, and the conversation was excellent. Pawlik and Ruth were highly entertained by the recounting of the adventures that the young traders had experienced over the last several months.

Their market research and exploration brought significant dividends as they secured markets that had never been opened before and suffered from being underserved. There was also a significant factor in that an armed merchanter could travel to places where a less protected vessel was in danger of being hijacked.

The mercenaries that Ruth had mentor the Peregrine group had done an excellent job. While several people were still embedded with the traders, most mercenary positions were filled with permanent clan folk. From
